Watch owner of Compete Field Services, Duane King talk over how he grew his start-up company to a one-stop shop for all heavy machinery.

Hamilton-Based Hydraulic Hose Repair

Hamilton-based hydraulic hose repair service, Complete Field Service started as a one-man band in 2019, and has grown to a team of 9. With 2 BOApod Hose Repair units in his fleet, they provide a full service to heavy machinery. Including onsite welding, mobile servicing, engineering, air-conditioning, hydraulic rams & pumps & hydraulic hose repair.

About Complete Field Service

We run a full equipment and truck heavy diesel workshop.

We offer a one-stop-shop for all our clients, heavy mechanical repairs, servicing mobile welding for all your onsite welding requirements. Workshop, we've got engineers in the workshop as well. We do air conditioning, hydraulics, rams, pumps, drive motors and then alongside that the hydraulic hosing as well.

We provide service to most industries; civil, forestry, trucking, line haul, and local trucking. Yeah, we work on everything that comes through our workshop from Utes to light trucks. Full truck and trailer units, diggers, bulldozers, wheel loaders. We cover all the diesel industry as much as we physically can.

I started Complete Field Services in 2019. We set it up.

Started off with just the one-man band with one Ute and a trailer with a welder on. Started it by myself and we've just grown from that. We took on our first staff member in 2021, right in the middle of a lockdown, we started, but that's sort of grown quite quickly from there.

We now have nine of us, myself, and eight staff members and we have a broad range of experience across the different trades. Including an auto electrician auto Sparky, yeah, couple of engineers and 4-5 mechanics.

We got our first BOApod nearing the end of ‘21.

What made you decide to get BOApod?

It was just a sideline option to add to the business for another string to our bow, so to speak. And that sort of quickly evolved and we've got two BOApods now. Which gives us one on the road full time and gives us a second one to back it up. What we like is just the ease of working out of them. They're brilliantly set up to work out of.

I, myself have run hose vans for excessive 20 years and I find the BOApod brilliant to work out of. Definitely very versatile because you don't have a dedicated vehicle. You can literally hook it to any vehicle, take it to site, get it done and that being a standalone self-contained unit makes it very easy.

The hose is all on reels and the way the drawers are laid out for your fittings, very easy to find your fittings for the hose. They're just a superior design and they work very efficiently.

Benefits of Having the BOApod

The BOApod has proven to be quite a good asset for us. As it gives you an extra revenue stream. You're not just charging man hours, you've got a product that you're selling as well, which you're making money on. So, it does add a great extra revenue stream to the business.

We can go to site with an oil leak that's unknown. It could be an engine oil leak, it could be a hydraulic leak, but we take the pod, take a pod with us and the number of times we have gone to a job that was just an oil leak and it actually turned out to be a hose, fitting or something and just having the BOApod as part of our unit, that turned up to site just allowed us to get the job done quicker and efficiently. And it’s something our customers have become quite fond of themselves for the uptime of their product.

BOA has been a huge support to us and backed us and when things have gone a little bit quiet, they've come down and supported us and helped cold call and called on other few contacts that they've had. And they've been very supportive and growing our business whenever I've had an issue, if we couldn't sort it on the phone, they've come down, they've sorted it.

We've got things back on track and they've just really helped us grow and flourish as a business.

BOA supply the Yokohama product. Like I say, I've been in the industry a long time, 25 years as a mechanic and I have worked in a hose van for 20 odd years. The hose, the product itself has proven to be very reliable, very robust. We have had a couple of customers that had a bad run of hosing. We've replaced it all with the Yokohama product and that stuff's been on for months and we haven't had to replace those hoses since. It's proving to be a very robust, very strong product out in the field, especially in the forestry and scrap steel type environments where it's very harsh, very abrasive. It stands up to the tests and trials of it all pretty well!

The BOAhub

Another advantage of BOA is their app. The online ordering of stock through the app, the app to find fittings you make it. You might get caught out with an odd metric fitting or something you’re not very familiar with. It's very easy to find on the app and find the specs and dimensions and find the fitting and then find stock and get stock ordered for those parts. Another one that's proved very reliable for us is the Find a BOApod if we're not in the area or we haven't been able to service a client, I’ve actually jumped on the app and found another BOApod in the area and rung them directly and got them to go and help cover our needs to get the job done. So the app has been a very valuable tool for us as well.

Do you recommend BOA to others?

It doesn't matter whether you're small or large. If you're looking for another revenue stream and another reliable source of product and a bunch of good buggers to deal with that really come on board and do help you grow, and they’ve got your best interest in heart, I do recommend BOA. They’ve been excellent for us.

Go from a one-man band and with their support, we're at nine. So that sort of speaks for itself. Just having that backing of another company behind you.
