NJP Logging BOApod Review
"We don't use a lot of hoses, but after running some numbers, and thinking, even if it just covers what we are spending now I was prepared to give it a go, and it's hands down the best decision I've made." - Nathan Peters.
About NJP Logging & Tree Services Company
NJP Logging and Tree Service Company started logging 24 years ago. They are a steep slope harvesting company, based in Colac, Victoria. Harvesting steep slopes and yachtways. Currently, they run one full-time crew and have another small crew part-time doing private woodlots. They have a 568 Satco falling head falling and shoveling to a 635D six-wheel drive skidder, and a 568 cutting to length on the landing and the Volvo loading out.
This morning we did a grapple hose on the loader within 15 minutes we had that machine back up and running again.
I'm Nathan Peters, owner of NJP Logging and Tree Services. We're a steep slope harvesting company, based in Colac, Victoria. Harvesting steep slopes and otways. Currently, we just run the one full-time crew and we have another small crew part-time doing private woodlots.
I've been logging for 24 years.
Moved over from New Zealand 15 years ago. We have the 568 Satco falling head falling and shoveling to the 635D six-wheel drive skidder, and the 568 cutting to length on the landing and the Volvo here loading out.
Challenges in the Logging Industry
Probably the biggest challenges are just the steep slopes, weather conditions obviously, it gets very wet up here, and probably haulage - just getting wood moved.
It's hard to put a number on downtime but I'd have to say it would run to the thousands depending on how many machines were to be held up from doing their normal job due to a hose failure. Plus the cost of sending staff into town to get hoses as well.
Before we got the trailer, we were having to pull the hose off normally in the afternoon and we'd take it into town before the hose shop closed. We would always carry a couple of spares that would sort of tie us over until we could fill the day out. So we were quite good at preventative maintenance. Probably a minimum of three hours that we'd be waiting to have our machine running again.
Getting a BOApod
Took a lot of convincing because we don't use a lot of hoses, but I ran some numbers and thought well even if it just covers what we're sort of spending now what I was prepared to give it a go and it's yeah, hands down best decision I've made. Really really good to use. Everything's at hand and easy access. Everything's pretty functional. I only normally have one or two guys who make the hoses, and they find it really easy.
Josh came out on site and took us through the trailer and made sure we understood how to make hoses, and what we were doing and that all was pretty really good.
And also ordering stock and stuff has been really easy as well. Generally, if we see a hose that has wear on it, and we think that needs replacing we'll fix that when we get a minute of downtime to do it and generally we will replace any other hoses in that area that are damaged as well. So that definitely improves our uptime.
We've been running the Taipan product for four months now and yeah can't find fault it. It’s been a good product. We're running a couple of older machines in our fleet which are probably getting to the stage where they need re-hosing, which can be a huge cost so being able to do that on our own terms and when it suits us and also to save up or to have that stock ready so when we get time we can just do it, that's a big plus to us as well. So we have always removed and put the hoses back on ourselves and taken it to a hose shop so having the trailer here, we're already doing three-quarters of the job so that just finishes off the circle kind of thing.
We don't need to rely on anyone else. It's there, it's on, it's going. Most hoses wouldn't take any longer than sort of half an hour to 45 minutes to replace with the trailer.
If we were to drive from here into town it would take us three hours by the time we get the hose made and we're back on site, so probably four hours by the time you get the hose off. You're losing half a day. Everyone can see how beneficial it is to the business.
It’s been awesome.
Found the whole experience pretty good and also how BOA has been able to help us get stock into the trailer and pay that stock off has been a huge benefit as well. Not having to fork that out of our cash flow.
Yeah I’d definitely recommend it to anyone running heavy machinery where they’re using enough hoses or whether they are remote, it will definitely benefit their business, for sure.
